The second month!

It’s been a month since my first post on here – that went quickly. Too quickly for me to have mastered the art of expert blogging. Sorry!

The last month has been a really lovely one, slightly less adventurous as a lot of it got taken up with eating food and spending time with family.

Songwriting workshops
I had this great opportunity to work on some songwriting courses at Dagenham Park school. I got to work alongside Phoebe Katis and Ciara Hader – who have a lot more experience of this sort of thing so it was great to get a chance to work with them. We worked with groups of Year 11s and Year 7s to write a song together. It was a really fun session and the work they came up with was really impressive. I hope I get more chances to do this sort of thing because I really enjoy it, pretty much all of secondary school for me was hanging out in the music block writing songs with my friends so it was so nice to be back in a school and being part of that from a teaching perspective instead (side note: Teenagers are really tall aren’t they?)

Sycamore Sykes
For a few days just before Christmas I was visited by the wonderful Sycamore Sykes. I met him through Lost Horizons Folk and Acoustic Club and totally fell for his music (which you can listen to here: https://soundcloud.com/sycamoresykes ) He came all the way from Cumbria to spend some time in Hertfordshire – I hope he had a good time, he seemed most impressed that we could order Dominoes until 4am any night of the week! There were “adventures” involving Prison Carol concerts, failed attempts at Christmas shopping, a drive thru Starbucks (who knew?), terrible failed pancake making and a pool game which I am sure he would rather forget because I won..I think…at least that’s what I am telling people.

We played a gig at the LP Café alongside good friends and other local musicians, Tom Craven, Lauren Rich and Lino. We also spent a little time in The Den at Folkstock records HQ recording a Christmas Carol. You can still get hold of that as download on my BandCamp if you like.

New Song
I put out a new song! It is called Until the Birds. I’d love to know what people think of it. It is a song I wrote about how some people are just a part of your life for a very brief amount of time but they still make a big impact, it’s a song about not wanting to be alone. It is also about the double standards I seem to find with regards to men and women and dating. You’d probably have to find me in a bar with a whiskey and have a few spare hours for me to ramble on at you about it but it certainly seems to me that there are a lot of people out there who seem to think some behaviour is ok if men do it but not if women do it. Seems an odd way of looking at things if you ask me. Doesn’t seem helpful to men or women. It’s a free download on my Bandcamp page it was a “Thanks so much for listening, here is a new song, more will follow” end of 2015 message really. You can listen on my You Tube channel with some footage from my November tour

The charity project I run gets particularly busy at Christmas time so I hid away in prison working on that for a while. A lot more of December and Early January was spent eating food, drinking and being merry with my family.

It’s been a bit of a weird time reflecting back over the last year. It was a lovely Christmas but definitely one of the hardest I’ve ever had with regard to missing somebody and feeling like somebody should have been there who wasn’t.

It’s been a strange time with the news around the world and closer to home.

It’s been a strange time in the music world with some great losses of some truly inspirational people.

So some lyrics to live by;

“Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink.
The years go by, as quickly as a wink.
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think”

    Obviously posted prior to 11/01/2016…..Another tragic loss. Keep treading the path which beckons you, Minnie…Shine a light on our world of music: Songs of joy; songs of hope; songs of empathy and understanding….All bring solace to vulnerable souls and give us, those who know you, much reason to rejoice 🙂
